A
mandatory pre-market approval system for domestic gas appliances was established.According
to this system, from January 2003, all domestic gas appliances, including cookers,
water heaters and clothes dryers, as well as portable cassette cookers fuelled
by small disposable gas cylinders, will have to bear an approved mark - the
"GU Mark", an assurance of internationally recognised safety standards.
As vehicles account for a significant
share in our total energy consumption, the Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme
was extended to petrol passenger cars this year. To qualify for the scheme,
cars should have vehicle emissions and fuel consumption test reports issued
by recognised laboratories. The scheme aims to encourage car manufacturers
and importers to improve the energy efficiency of passenger cars supplied
to Hong Kong.
Electrical
installations with a loading exceeding 100 amperes should be inspected and certified
at least once every five years to ensure safety. Today, more than 96 per cent
of all 35,000 residential buildings in Hong Kong have been inspected and tested
for electrical safety, thanks to the relentless endeavours of our staff and
the kind support of the Buildings Department and Home Affairs Department.
