[Event Highlights Announcement] Prize Presentation Ceremony for Building Energy Efficiency Online Quiz Competition successfully concluded
Public Engagement in Energy Saving and Green Buildings for Striving Towards Carbon Neutrality
The Prize Presentation Ceremony for the Building Energy Efficiency Online Quiz Competition (The ceremony) was successfully held on March 10, 2023. In addition to presenting the awards of the Online Quiz Competition, experts from universities were invited to share their ideas in energy saving and green buildings for the participants. A survey was conducted in the ceremony to collect the views of participants about the way forward of Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance. A live quiz challenge followed the above activities and concluded the ceremony. Our future pillars – young people and all members of the public are encouraged to continuously reduce carbon emissions from their daily life for striving towards Carbon Neutrality in Hong Kong before 2050. Details of the Prize Presentation Ceremony
The purpose of this online quiz competition that organized by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) for the members of public, students from high school, tertiary institutions and university students is to promote energy efficiency in buildings and the achievements in achieving carbon neutrality.
Nearly 1,000 members from the public and students participated in this online quiz competition, among which nearly 300 participants were provided their ideas of how to enhance energy efficiency in buildings and achieve carbon neutrality (please click here to view the answers of the online quiz competition). The EMSD invited experts from various professional institutions and universities to serve as judging panel for this online quiz competition (please click here for the members of judging panel). After detailed deliberation by the judging panel, the most creative and feasible proposals were selected out of all submitted proposals (please click here for the winner list of innovative idea awards and merit awards). Ideas of the winners include application of innovative technology, Internet of Things (loT) and big data analysis to optimize the operation of buildings; adoption of artificial intelligence (A.I.) to proactively identify energy-saving opportunities in buildings; using intelligent crowd monitoring system to adjust the operational settings in buildings automatically; installation of other renewable energy systems other than solar panels; and open energy data policy to allow the public to compare their energy performance of buildings. All ideas are very creative.
EMSD also invited Ir Prof. Michael LEUNG, Associate Provost (Academic Affairs) of the City University of Hong Kong and Ir Prof. Vivien LU from the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to deliver talks in the ceremony (please click here for their presentation slides). The ceremony also invited the participants at the scene to conduct a questionnaire survey to collect their views on the way forward of the Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance. Nearly 90% of the participants support to expand the scope of the regulation to cover data centers; and 90% support to require more building types to carry out energy audits; almost 80% support to shorten the frequency of conducting energy audit to 5 years or less; and 90% consider that disclosure of energy-related information of buildings could promote energy saving. These opinions are valuable and would be considered for our future review of Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance (please click here for the survey results, Chinese version only). Another popular section of the ceremony was the Live Quiz Challenge. The atmosphere was lively in which all participants were participating actively in the Live Quiz Challenge and they were found to be very familiar with the knowledge of building energy efficiency (please click here for the Q&A of the Live Quiz Challenge, Chinese version only).
