Make Use of the Services provided by the Approved LPG Distributors

Why should members of the public make use of services provided by the approved distributors?

If members of the public make use of services from the non-approved distributors, not only will they fail to enjoy the quality services, but may also unduly expose themselves, their family members, neighbours and other persons to potential gas risks. For safety reasons, please identify the distributors approved by the respective registered gas supply companies to serve you.

How can members of the public identify an approved distributor ?

Approved distributor may be identified by:

  1. the certificate issued by the respective registered gas supply company displayed in the shop; and

  2. the registered gas contractor number shown on the invoice.

How are the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distributors regulated?

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is responsible for enforcing the Gas Safety Ordinance (Cap. 51). According to the Ordinance, the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distributors (hereinafter called distributors) are monitored by the respective registered gas supply company; and the gas installation work shall be carried out by registered gas installer employed by the registered gas contractor. Moreover, the distributors should also comply with the “Code of Practice for Cylinder LPG Distributors in Hong Kong”.

Who are the distributors?

According to the Gas Safety Ordinance (Cap. 51), a person shall become a distributor of a registered gas supply company provided that he or she has obtained written approval from that company.

What services can the distributors provide to members of the public?

Apart from selling cylinder LPG, the distributors are obliged to conduct regular checks of cylinder LPG installation for their customers, employ registered gas installer(s) and provide necessary training to their staff. In addition, they may give advice and support relating to gas work to their customers and handle alleged gas leakage incidents.

To facilitate providing the above services, distributors will collect from the customers their following information according to the requirements of the Code of Practice:

  1. Personal data which include customer name, gas installation / residential address and contact phone number; and

  2. Gas installation descriptions which include brand and model of gas appliances installed in customer premises, next replacement dates of cylinder regulator and flexible gas tubing, etc.

For safety reasons, members of the public should cooperate with the distributors in providing necessary customer information.
