Beauty in symmetry: sunshades that bedeck the entire façade.

The lower and middle floors of the original HACTL2 Building were open on the side and this design lent itself well to conversion into EMSD's vehicle workshop. However, such an open-space environment posed challenges in energy saving, since adequate ventilation is essential in workshop areas. In addition, safety measures had to be reinforced due to the building's close proximity to highway flyovers. Meeting these challenges required unique solutions and these were successfully tailor-made and implemented, adding to the new headquarters status as a modern and innovative working environment.

Greenery greets visitors as they approach the building.

The requirement that the new building be people-friendly, empowering staff to work efficiently and effectively, was central to EMSD's vision. In response, Mr Yuen's team designed a modern, airy main lobby, created skylights and used glass generously on the office floors to optimise natural lighting. To facilitate more effective communications among staff, the team also created a relaxing ambiance with tranquil greenery, and made provision for a sizeable canteen. It also successfully negotiated with the developer of the adjacent commercial complex on the construction of a footbridge to connect the two buildings for easier access to EMSD by staff, visitors and members of the public.
