The
new EMSD Headquarters, in its former life as
an air cargo terminal, was owned and operated by the
Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (HACTL) until 1998
when the airport relocated to Chek Lap Kok. Anthony
Wong, Managing Director of HACTL, shares his thoughts
on the building.
"Hong
Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (HACTL) began operations
in 1976 at Kai Tak Airport. To satisfy the ever-increasing
demand for air freight handling services, HACTL constructed
the Terminal 2 building, opening it in 1991. Terminal
2 bore testimony to the thriving growth and development
of Hong Kong's air freight industry.
"We are
delighted that the Electrical and Mechanical Services
Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government has made
excellent use of the original Terminal 2 building. Converting
it into its new headquarters, it has given new life
and purpose to a building that is structurally sound.
The conversion also demonstrates modern environmental
protection concepts via a variety of features, including
sun shades and other facilities on the façade
to dissipate heat and therefore reduce electricity consumption.
"We wish
EMSD every success as it begins a new chapter in its
history at the well-equipped new headquarters. We have
no doubt that the organisation will continue to make
significant contributions to the prosperity and development
of Hong Kong."
