Cushioning the Shock of
Emergency Landings

Given the likely impact of an emergency landing, every airport needs a contingency plan that will ensure the safety of passengers and ground personnel alike.

On behalf of the Fire Services Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Trading Fund (EMSTF) has applied its vehicle engineering expertise to procure a crash fire tender (CFT) to provide airfield fire-fighting and rescue services at Hong Kong International Airport.

The new CFT is able to promptly attend aircraft fire scenes for carrying out emergency rescue services.
The CFT is capable of reaching 80 km/h from a standing cold start within 25 seconds and hitting a maximum speed of 140 km/h.  It is loaded with 16,000 litres of water and 1,920 litres of fire-fighting foam concentrate. The CFT has a roof monitor that can deliver 7,000 litres of foam per minute with a range of over 90m, which is sufficient to fully cover incidents on today's largest aircraft, the AirBus A380, above the most stringent requirements laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
