The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is an informal forum set up in 1989 for high-level government-to-government dialogue on trade and economic issues.  The Energy Working Group (EWG) is one of the working groups of the APEC.  Established in 1990, the EWG seeks to maximise the contribution of the energy sector to economic and social well-being in the APEC region, while mitigating the environmental effects of energy supply and use.  It also serves as a platform for member economies to facilitate energy trade and investment and enhance regional energy security, contributing to economic growth, social well-being and sustainability.

The EWG convenes twice a year to discuss energy-related issues and carry out capacity-building projects, in support of the two APEC regional energy goals: improving energy intensity by at least 45 percent by 2035 compared to 2005 levels; and doubling the share of modern renewables in the energy mix by 2030, relative to 2010 levels.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department is the official representative of Hong Kong, China in the EWG of the APEC Participating actively in the EWG's events and activities, we share experiences and exchange information, as well as gain valuable references for developing energy programmes in Hong Kong.

Through our involvement with associated expert groups, including the Expert Group on Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EGEEC), Expert Group on Energy Data and Analysis (EGEDA), Expert Group on New and Renewable Energy Technologies (EGNRET), and Expert Group on Clean Fossil Energy (EGCFE), we also obtain information on the most up-to-date advances in energy technology, industry standards and policy developments among other economies in the region.
